Protecting agent for peptide synthesis. The bulky isopropyl group (compared to the ethyl group) enables more selective reduction reactions (e.g., β-selective reduction of anomeric C-phenyl ketals) without reducing their activity (e.g., trifluoromethanesulfonate-catalyzed reductive etherification of trimethylsilyl). Used in the highly diastereoselective preparation of trans-1,2-diols catalyzed by Ni(O)N-heterocyclic carbene complexes.
